Tenth Grade Humanities
Welcome to tenth grade humanities! You might be wondering, what exactly is humanities, and why should I have to take another humanities class? As the word “humanities” suggests, in humanities class, we study human beings. However, this isn’t specific enough. In biology class, we also study human beings. Specifically, we study how the human body works. What’s the difference?
In humanities, we study what it means to be a human being. In addition to having bodies, each of you has a perspective, as well as values, interests, families, and communities with which you identify. Our aim in humanities class is to study how human beings (including ourselves) interpret the world and give it meaning. Humanities class is about what it’s like to be a human being, and our goal is to examine the historical, cultural, social and political forces that have and continue to shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. My sincere hope is that investigating fundamental questions about our own humanity will help us gain a clearer sense of who we are, where we come from, and what we stand for. |
